Environmental hero Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and champion paddleboarder Anthony Vela to promote healthy oceans on April 16
LOS ANGELES, March 30, 2016 — Today, Los Angeles Waterkeeper announces that international environmental hero Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and world-renowned paddleboarder and surfer Anthony Vela will lead its 5th annual paddleboard race, Stand Up For Clean Water. The race is one of the largest of its kind in the nation and organizers expect nearly 300 paddleboarders to participate in support of clean water.
“If you love water sports, you love clean water. We’re honored to have international heroes from both the paddling and environmental community working to protect and restore Los Angeles’ marine habitats,” says Los Angeles Waterkeeper Executive Director Bruce Reznik.
Named one of Time magazine’s “Heroes for the Planet,” Robert F. Kennedy Jr. serves as founder and President of Waterkeeper Alliance and senior attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council. Mr. Kennedy will address the crowd, discussing how the important work of Los Angeles Waterkeeper connects with the efforts of more than 280 independent Waterkeepers protecting waterways across the globe.
World-renowned paddleboarder and surfer Anthony Vela will emcee Stand Up For Clean Water. Vela has won numerous premier standup paddleboard events worldwide, including the San Clemente Ocean Festival and the 2014 Hobie Hennessey’s Waterman’s Challenge, and is widely regarded for his eagerness to share his passion for water sports with others.
Both Kennedy and Vela have a long history supporting the causes of Los Angeles Waterkeeper in protecting and restoring the region’s waters. This year’s race will take place on the important Point Dume State Marine Reserve, a Marine Protected Area (MPA) that is home to aquatic species such as sheephead and rockfish and is along the migratory path for humpback whales.
Stand Up for Clean Water, a Waterkeeper Alliance SPLASH Series Event, is presented nationally by Toyota and locally by Whole Foods Market. The benefit features two-mile, five-mile and kids standup paddleboard races. The post-race award ceremony and beach party will feature live music, silent auction and raffle. Paradise Cove Beach Café, Tail o’ the Pup, Ninkasi Brewing Company and Patrón Tequila will provide food and refreshments. All proceeds support Los Angeles Waterkeeper’s work to protect and restore Los Angeles’ coastal and inland waters.
