Smarter Water

In collaboration with Heal the Bay, Surfrider (South Bay Chapter), Desal Response Group and other local activists and environmental organizations, LA Waterkeeper is organizing against West Basin Municipal Water District’s proposed ocean desalination plant in the South Bay.

Seawater desalination is the most expensive and energy-intensive option for LA’s water. We are actively campaigning for West Basin, which sells water to 17 municipalities throughout LA County, to prioritize more cost-effective and environmentally friendly water supply options–and only look to desal as a last resort.

The City of Manhattan Beach formalized its opposition to the desal plant in February of 2016. The City of Hermosa Beach soon followed. Recently, we hosted a town hall in Culver City that brought nearly 100 community members together to learn about smarter water options for LA County.

Read more about our fight against this project in the LA Times, Easy Reader News, The Beach Reporter, and the Daily Breeze!

Ask West Basin to Choose Smarter Water!

Please consider signing on to our opposition letter, in which we ask the West Basin Board to abandon any plans for ocean desalination, and instead pursue a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, & Restore approach to developing its water portfolio. Add your name or the name of your organization below!
