Melissa von Mayrhauser, Watershed Programs Manager

Melissa’s goal is to bring our freshwater ecosystems back to life and help people lead healthier lives through scientific research, partnership building, and watershed-level planning. She holds a Master’s of Science in Water Science, Policy and Management from the University of Oxford and a Bachelor of Arts in Sustainable Development and French and Francophone Studies from Columbia University.

Since 2016, Melissa has led LA Waterkeeper’s Watershed Programs. She has connected community members with our waterways, conducted scientific analyses of watershed health indicators, and advocated for a healthier environment. She particularly enjoys conducting fieldwork at the Los Angeles River with students and volunteers, especially when insect monitoring is involved!

Melissa previously worked at an environmental design firm in Brooklyn as a water education project manager. She has also conducted hydrological research in Jordan, Morocco and India. During her college years in New York City, Melissa interned at Columbia University’s Earth Institute, served as the president of the student water research club, and volunteered with Hudson Riverkeeper.

Melissa spent half of her childhood by the three rivers of Pittsburgh and the other half in the San Francisco Bay Area. Some of her best memories include walking along the Pacific Ocean with her beagle.
